PTE and IELTS – What is the Difference?

PTE and IELTS are tests that assess a person’s English proficiency. They are both designed to evaluate a person’s skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. While PTE uses computer-based testing, IELTS is a paper-based test. It also has a speaking component that is marked by a human examiner.

What is PTE?

PTE is a test that assesses the English communication skills of non-native English speakers who want to study abroad. It is a computer-based test and uses a multi-level grading system to assess the candidate’s English proficiency.

The exam consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. The candidates are given a score for each section and are then averaged to give an overall score.

IELTS is a common English language test that is accepted globally. It has a grading system of 0 – 9 with a gap of 0.5 for each section and an averaged pte score to ilets.

PTE Academic is another English language test that is used to evaluate the English communication skills of foreigners who are interested in studying abroad. It uses the Global Scale of English to measure candidates’ English proficiency level.

Differences between PTE and IELTS

In order to study or settle abroad, you need to take a test that proves your proficiency in the English language. There are many tests available but the most common are IELTS and PTE.

While both tests are important, they differ in various ways. One major difference is the mode of testing.

Traditionally, IELTS is a pen-and-paper exam but the PTE Academic test is computer-based. In this way, the test-takers can access more information about a question and make an informed decision.

Another key difference is the marking system. While the reading and listening sections are automatically machine-marked, the speaking section is marked physically by an examiner.

Age limit for PTE

When you are looking to study abroad, a PTE score can help you get into the college of your choice. This test is accepted by universities around the world and stands as a proof of your English language skills.

There is no age limit for PTE. However, if you are below 18 years of age, you need to submit parental consent before taking the exam.

The PTE test is divided into a written paper and a spoken test. The written paper tests your listening and reading skills. The spoken test assesses your speaking and writing skills.

PTE scores are typically available within 12 weeks of the test date. This is because the test is computer adaptive and it takes time to process results.

Conversion of PTE score to IELTS

The PTE and IELTS are two of the most popular English language exams. The scores from these tests are used for university entry in many nations. However, some universities accept only one of these tests.

This happens due to the differences in their formats and markings schemes. As a result, students who have taken the PTE exam must convert their score to IELTS, if they want to be admitted into colleges that only take IELTS scores.

Both tests measure an applicant’s English proficiency in four areas: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The PTE test also has an additional section, called the Young Learners Measure, which aims to assess the communication skills of young students.

The PTE test results are awarded in the form of a number between 10 and 90, based on the Global Scale of English. A score between 30 and 42 indicates a basic user of the language, while a score between 43 and 58 is equivalent to the B1 level in the Common European Framework for References for Languages (CEFR).

How to Convert IELTS Scores to PTE Scores

Most universities require applicants to take a test like PTE or IELTS. These tests measure candidates’ abilities in the reading, writing, speaking and listening of English.

These exams are regarded as the gateway for Indian students to study abroad. These tests are available in two modes – on paper and computer-based.

However, they work differently and have different scoring systems. The main difference between the two is that PTE scores are calculated on a score range of 10 to 90 points, while IELTS scores are calculated on a scale from 1 to 9.

Due to the difference in format and scoring system, it is often necessary for exam takers to convert their PTE scores to IELTS scores. This is especially important for those who want to be admitted to institutions that only accept IELTS scores.
